What is Soundtrap?

Soundtrap is a freemium browser based audio workstation that allows people to collaboratively create, mix, and produce music or podcasts. What make this tools so unique is that multiple people can jump on a video call and then record from different inputs all into a mixing interface. Soundtrap is the perfect tool for remotely create music or podcasts.

What can it be used for?

As you may have heard in the episode we were just starting to test it when we recorded the episode, but since then have used the tool several times. While it isn't perfect it has worked pretty well. Soundtrap gives you the ability to record from multiple devices even when you and someone else are not in the same room, it allows you automate recordings to cut back editing, gives you access to loops and instruments, and a beat maker tool.

Now that's the tools it gives you but what are some ways you could use this in education? Well we see some major ways.

  1. Podcast Projects - As we have mentioned before having students create a podcast can be a great way to have them creatively process ideas. Soundtrap is a great tool to provide to your students for creating a podcast. It allows them to video call right from within the tool, record each of their mics into separate tracks and then collaboratively edit the podcast. One student could edit, others could review and leave comments and then one could finalize. All of that can be done right in Soundtrap.
  2. Composing Music - We know that doing music courses online can be difficult, but Soundtrap can make it much easier. With sound trap you could assign out to students a music project where they have to record and produce something. With soundtrap this would be made easy.

These are just two of the major ideas we see Sountrap coming in handy for, but we are sure there are many other ways to use it!

How do I get started?
