This Week's App: Zencastr

What is Zencastr?

Untitled

In Episode 49 we mentioned the awesome app Zencastr and we are happy to say some great updates have caused us to bring it back for a second visit in this episode.

Zencastr is a web-based podcast production tool that allows you to record multiple people from different locations to separate audio and video tracks. It makes remote podcast production so much easier.

What can it be used for?

As we mentioned before, Zencastr has a pretty clear use as a tool, podcasting! The big advantage now is that all audio recording is totally free through the tool. This means Zencastr could easily be the tool you suggest to your students to do podcast activities.

Podcast activities are create alternative assessments that can teach your students how to research and process that research. So often we do papers, podcast activities can easily replace many large papers while letting your students be creative.

With Zencastr all your students need is a mic on their computer or phone, then they can easily record and produce the podcast each week. It works great for collaborative podcast activities since students dont have to be in the same room to use it and they can use features like their chat tool to work out things while recording. Zencastr even has note features that can give your students a place to create show notes for each episode.

How do I get started?

The big update that has went in place since the last time we talked about this tool is that the free hobbyist plan now provides unlimited free audio recording. This new update makes it more realistic to use. Zencastr is pretty easy to pick up so we recommend signing up for their free plan first and try it to do some recordings. You can also learn more about using the tool by reviewing their Getting Started guides.
